Hercules
Hercules came to MAGDRL in October 2024 from a breeder/hoarding situation. He had stitches in his neck from being bitten and bullied by other dogs; Hercules also suffers from heartworm, Ehrlichia (a tick-borne disease), and liver issues (possibly related to the heartworm). He will need to be neutered after his heartworm issue is resolved. Hercules approaches new people and dogs tentatively (not aggressive at all, mostly ignores them unless he gets scared), and finds things that move fast either scary (little children) or as something to chase (squirrels, small dogs that run). If he doesn't like something, he barks at it - this includes not wanting to do something.
Despite coming from a rough environment, Hercules is the cuddliest dog ever! He wants nothing more than to lie on his person's lap and cuddle up next to them in bed. He loves to play tug with blankets, and wants to be involved in everything you are doing. Hercules does not yet know any commands, but has already learned many new things, including how to stick his head out of the car window, that his Dane sister's food and treats are not his, and that leashes mean fun times are coming!
Hercules is good with children 12 and over and medium to larger dogs. It is unknown how he is with cats. Hercules deserves so much love, and has so much love to give. Please consider helping with his care. We look forward to having him fully recovered and healthy and ready for his forever home.
Update: November 18, 2024
Hercules had to be hospitalized for several days due to a reaction to medication. After flushing the meds from his system, it will take several weeks, if not months for his body to recover. Due to these issues, we have had to put off his heartworm treatment until his internal organs have fully stabilized. He is home, and we are seeing great improvements in his bloodwork. On his last check-up, all the vet techs stopped by to see him and give him cuddles because they missed him and loved him so much.

Dolly
All puppy adoptions will require a spay deposit to be refunded at a later date.
A training agreement will be required for each adoption.
Update: December 27, 2024
Dolly is a 4-month-old (December 2024) little girl who has been with us since October, she has had several vet visits and has continued healing. During her last vet visit the doctor was very pleased with her healing and currently does not feel surgery is currently necessary depending how she matures. If you didn't know her back story you would know she's had issues with her knee in the past. She also had a missing toenail and sore on one of her toe pads, both are healing beautifully.
Dolly would flourish in a home who will continue to socialize her to new things and people, she is very unsure of children's high energy. She is reserved when meeting new people but with encouragement and positive reinforcement from strangers she will be able to overcome this. She has a natural curiosity which will help her in new situations. Dolly has lived in multi dog households and respects the other dogs. She has lived with dog savvy cats who tolerate her puppy antics and feel comfortable enough to curl up and sleep with her.
Her ideal home would be someone who is patient with her and will continue to expose her to new situations and people. Dolly can live in a home with children but the children in the home need to understand she is shy and allow her to warm up to them. She enjoys traveling, and rides well in a car. She would flourish with a confident canine companion but would be fine as in a single dog home.

Gwen
All puppy adoptions will require a spay deposit to be refunded at a later date.
A training agreement will be required for each adoption.
Gwen hasn’t had the easiest start to her early life. She was taken in by MAGDRL in October 2024 from a cruelty case. There were several dogs seized that day and we would love to give this little lady the life her parents never got to have. This 3 month pup is quickly learning that there is kindness in the world and she is enjoying figuring out life outside of the small backyard pen she was forced to live in.
Gwen is a super sweet puppy that is enjoying all the good things that life is now bringing her way. She is very food motivated, so is eager to learn new things or figure out what she's supposed to do to earn any treats that are offered. She's been catching on quickly to the routine of the house, and follows the lead of the two adult Danes that she's living with in her foster home. She loves to play with toys and go on walks. Right now, she's on the small side for a Dane her age.
Gwen is sometimes a little shy when situations are overwhelming (like meeting entire groups of people). This makes her want to run and hide. But she only takes a few minutes to get comfortable with the situation and then she's interested in meeting everyone! She is being introduced to new experiences daily with lots of positive reinforcement and is becoming more curious and less shy. Gwen has been around adults, kids, other dogs and cats, and has done well with all of them. She's also a quick learner. Gwen is being crate trained and is getting more secure and comfortable by the day with the crate. She is also starting to understand that the best way to earn treats and food is to sit quietly. As long as her forever family continues to give her training and consistency, she's going to be a really great dog!

Duke
Duke is six years old, 155lbs, brown eyes, white paws with a small white diamond shaped pattern on the back of his neck, white chest and is very well trained in and out of the home. Duke is a talker and shares his wants through a subtle toned growl/whine. He is very quick to pick up on voices to the extent he will listen to your phone conversation and know you are on the other end and start saying hello via barking.
He is very cautious in his behavior with our five grandchildren and elderly family members. His temperament is as most Great Danes a gentle giant. He has never been aggressive towards people or other animals. He is, however, protective in the home and yard. He will bark/growl at passersby but should they stop he will want to receive a pet to the head. He does very well during his vet visits although as other dogs too, is anxious or gets slightly stressed.
He typically enjoys having water in the morning and a single meal in the afternoon. His needs are usually suggested when he wants to receive either on his schedule as he will prompt you with a snuggle.
His verbal command recognition includes place, no, backup, poop, pee-pee, sit, and come for example.
He does roam the house freely while the family is out of the house daily and is “not” accustomed to being on any furniture. He knows his bed placement and is perfectly happy to be in any one of them.
Occasionally, he will exhibit mild separation anxiety that passes quickly. This is mentioned as you may hear him bark when leaving the house, but it subsides quickly with him going to his bed.
Duke enjoys bathing in the driveway with a hose and his favorite part of bathing is drying off, he will tussle with the towel and readily accept being dried off.

Hank
Hank is a 3 year old neutered male Great Dane. Through no fault of his own he is currently up for adoption. When he was younger he was being trained as a service dog. However, he could not contain his excitement when he saw other animals, so he failed that job. He went to live with a family for the past year or so who had small dogs, but Hank plays a little bit rough for a small dog and uses his paws too hard on them while playing. He came here for training with me recently to learn how to be calm around the other animals. During his stay with me here, his owners got divorced and neither of them can keep him. He has absolutely no aggression at all, and is extremely sweet and loving. He has lived with dogs and cats. One of my chickens recently flew into his dog yard and he did not harm it, although it did have a lot of saliva on it LOL. He is crate trained, leash trained and housebroken. He knows all of his obedience commands. He's a very good boy and will make somebody very very happy. He is currently located near Harrisonburg, Virginia.
